PURPOSE OF WORKS
Cam Ranh International Airport is the main airport serving Nha Trang area located in a town in the Khanh Hoa province. Nha Trang city is 30 km from the airport.
In 2016, Cam Ranh airport handled approximately 3.3 million passengers, which is more than double its capacity. Despite the Airports Corporation of Vietnam’s (ACV) efforts to upgrade the terminal’s capacity in 2014, the passenger number again surpassed the maximum capacity in 2015. Construction of a new terminal building was, therefore, envisaged to be the ideal solution to achieve optimum efficiency at the airport. The design and architecture of the new terminal takes inspiration from Salanganes’ nest, a bird’s nest popularly seen in Khanh Hoa Province.
Bauer Vietnam Ltd. has been awarded piling package based on competitive and economical alternative design. During construction of piling works, Employer also awarded pile caps construction to Bauer Vietnam.
ONSTRUCTION WORKS & SPECIAL FEATURES Bauer state of art drilling rigs model BG 28 and BG 9 have been deployed to complete 786 piles within 100 calendar days. Such challenging construction schedule was achieved with highly experienced construction teams, suitable drilling tools and perfect planning.
To complete the piling works in shortest possible duration as per Employer’s requirement, mass piling works were commenced before pile load testing. Total 8 number of piles were tested up to 200% working load using kentledge method. The maximum settlement of 13.85mm was recorded under the maximum test load for working piles recommended in Vietnamese Standards. This proves Bauer espertise and knowledge in special foundation works.
Another notable feature was construction of bored piles for fixed gangway at distance of less than 1m from the underground optic fibre cables of operational airport.
SOIL / ROCK CONDITION
First 20m below ground level is mainly dense fine sand and clay with SPT values within range of 15 to 40 followed up by weathered sandstone layer. Originally designed multiple piles under each column were replaced with single pile per column approach by Bauer Vietnam Ltd.
Foundation of the building consists of bored piles with diameter varying from 600 to 1000mm up to 40m drilling length.
